About the piece
This piece was performed during my sharing session at the Somerset House Future Artists Programme Work in Process exhibition. It combines live-coded music, visuals and spoken-word poetry to explore the feeling of time passing and the transition between seasons.
The poem and the visuals
The piece is based on Sunday Scaries, a poem I wrote about growing up, the arrival of autumn and the feeling that time is running out. It explores the anxiety of change, alongside the strange familiarity of returning to your everyday routine the following day. I created visuals inspired by flowing water and shifting landscapes to reflect these feelings.
Using my own writing
Originally, the performance featured poetry written by a friend, but for this sharing, I challenged myself to use my own writing and bring my poetry into my live-coding practice. Although my work primarily focuses on audio, I incorporated visual elements to expand the performance beyond sound.
Where it goes next
This was an important first step in developing a performance style that brings together live-coded music, improvisation and spoken word. I wanted to explore how these practices could exist within an art institution and how I could use code as a tool for expressing personal experiences and emotions.
Moving forward, I hope to continue developing this approach, experimenting with different sounds, faster-paced music and new ways of bringing poetry into live performance.
